Archive for April 2012

wwwmongoosepublishing.jpgThis is a very special episode. It is special because I am joined by Vickey Beaver to co-host this episode. Vickey has a TON of experience in games and it was an absolute blast to get to talk with her. We talk miniatures in Role Playing Games and whether they are necessary or not.

And is also special because we don’t have one interview. We have two!

The first interview is with Sandrine Triache, the lead 3d modeller for Mongoose Publishing. Since miniature making is something I know very little about it, I thought it’d be interesting to have an expert around and she didn’t disappoint. At all! Her insight in how Mongoose’s workflow and practices was really tremendous and the interview very informative.

BaneBeasts-Krull-Servile-Lord-of-Dis.jpgOn the subject of miniatures, Vickey and I talk about Salute 2012 and a specific company I stumbled upon in that convention, BaneLegions. I don’t exaggerate when I tell you they have some of the most incredibly detailed and gorgeous miniatures I have ever seen. The craftsmanship is just stunning and the design of the creatures incredibly original. No wonder the sculptor works for Weta International, and has participated in movies like Avatar and The Hobbit!

The second interview is with Brendan Davies, from Bedrock Games. He is the author and publisher of a really interesting selection of role playing games, of which Servants of Gaius is the latest and a very compelling and well crafted game based in ancient Rome.

Servant-of-Gaius.jpgHowever it is very interesting to see they have a very varied selection of games, from horror based to historical setting. Brendan gives an insight on the background of the company, as well as the philosophy of their games and game creation.

As always, your feedback is very welcome and you can get in touch by emailing the show on podcast@gmsmagazine.com. Very much look forward to hearing from you!

Hope you enjoy the show!

doctor-who-nuclear-time-small.jpgIt’s that time of the week where we can sit back and enjoy the hard work that goes into creating a quality podcast. Of you can listen to ours instead!

This is a special episode for various reasons. First of all because me and Dale are joined by the gorgeous Jenn from the Jennisodes to co-host our show. Apart from having a wealth of knowledge and the charm to go with it, Jenn just happens to be absolutely lovely and we had an absolutely great time.

We also have an interview with Oli Smith, Dr. Who enthusiast and author of many novels, graphic novels, video games and pretty much anything else you can think about related to Dr.Who.

No wonder then, that I had a great conversation with him about what makes a good Dr. Who character and how to bring the TV series and novels onto the table with the Dr.Who game published by Cubicle 7.

And we have a giveaway too! Don’t miss it at the end of the interview!

marvel_heroic_cover.jpgAnd a few days later than I was anticipating, the episode 38 of our podcast is out.

There is no doubt that 2012 is going to be an amazing years for super heroes. And it’ll be an amazing year for fans of super heroes because there are plenty of mega-cool stuff happening in any super heroic front you can think of.

The Avengers movie is going to take the cinemas by storm, the Batman movie will probably do the same, and our beloved Role Playing Games are not exception.

Thanks to Margaret Weis Productions, we can now enjoy the Marvel RPG. A new game based on the Cortex Plus system that has been designed to bring the comic books to life. Philippe Menard gave us a very good insight about this game in episode 32, but I thought we needed more, so I invited Cam Banks to come to the podcast and answer a few questions about the game. Of course being the inquisitive being I am, I couldn’t stop on the Marvel RPG and asked him about more things. Tons more things!

Cam, being the awesome type of person he actually is, not just answered everything I asked, but he brought an unexpected guest to the show. One that I couldn’t be happier to have around. Telling you would spoil the surprise, so I will wait until you listen to the podcast to find out who he is.

Dale and I talk about a lot of stuff. So much that I can’t even remember.

promethea_logo.jpgBut I remember we talk about Michael Bay and how appalled we are about his plans for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Oh.. and we have a new sponsor! A hint in the image to the right!

pic1117422_t.jpgIn this, bit later than usual, episode we have got a good for you.

Mark and I go head to head to discuss if Games Workshop is a good business or not. I don’t think they are a good business because they don’t do enough from a business point of view, and for their licensed products in general (not to mention their lack of contact with the general public). I don’t think they are bad, but they are not good either. Mark says they are because they make money and thus they do what they’re supposed to. But what do you think?

Thank goodness for us, Lorien was there to add some sense to the conversation!

We also have an interview with the guys behind X610Z: On the Ruins of Chaos, which is an amazing game.

pic1117421_md.pngFrom the publisher’s website:

Existenz: On the Ruins of Chaos is a living card and board game in which you control a brave band of survivors seeking refuge from the dangers of Mount Vargah. You achieve this by making your way towards the relative safety of a victory point, or by destroying your opponent in direct combat. Play your cards in order to gather resources, summon powerful allies, and cast dangerous fluxes or catalysts. However, you will suffer defeat if you run out of cards, so make sure you either defeat your opponents or reach the victory point before that happens.

There is an unboxing video in the website, so please feel free to take a look at that one. You can also download the rules from their website, which is strongly recommended. They have the best rules book ever written!

pic1117424_md.jpgHope you enjoy the show. We indeed welcome your feedback and you can always get hold of us by emailing us at Podcast@gmsmagazine.com.
